Rockingham County

History

Rockingham County, dubbed North Carolina's North Star, is nestled at the tip of the northern Piedmont Triad region, just south of the Virginia border.  It has 572 square miles with a population of 93,000 and it is just a one-hour drive to the mountains in the west or a three-hour drive to N.C.'s outstanding beaches in the east. The county was founded in 1785 and is named after Charles Watson-Wentworth, second Marques of Rockingham in Britain.  Wentworth gained popularity in America for securing repeal of the Stamp Act and for his efforts to end the Revolutionary War. Action by the General Assembly in 1798 established the town of “Wentworth” at the county seat.  The county is made up of six municipalities: the cities of Eden and Reidsville, and the towns of MadisonMayodan,   Stoneville  and  Wentworth  . Though Rockingham County is mostly rural, its communities still offer small-town living balanced with 21st century amenities.

The Richmond-Miles History Museum is located in the Gatewood House (circa 1822).
The Graves-Florance-Gatewood House is named for its owners in chronological order.  The Richmond-Miles Museum offers displays and artifacts of Caswell County history.  Yanceyville's courthouse square is legendary for it's history from the revolutionary war to the present. During the early 1800's, both the speaker of the North Carolina House and the President Pro Tem of the North Carolina Senate resided in Caswell County.  The majestic courthouse was completed in 1861.  Other County Historical Sites include the  Yanceyville Historic District,  and the Thomas Day House with its Union Tavern Located in Historic Milton.  This two story brick tavern is one of the earliest remaining taverns in North Carolina. Constructed in a sophisticated Federal style with three front entrances and interior end chimneys, it was partially destroyed by fire in 1988. Restoration is now in progress. The building was the residence and workshop of cabinet maker Thomas Day from mid 1840 to his death in 1860. Known as a "museum without walls", Milton was incorporated in 1796 and was at one time a bustling center of commerce, cultural and social life. This National Register Historic District has been called one of the most perfectly preserved examples of 19th century commercial districts. Many original buildings in downtown Milton are currently being renovated.   The town of Leasburg  was the first county seat of Caswell county. Leasburg is an impressive collection of early 19th century residential architecture within a dignified village atmosphere.
