 Davidson County

Davidson County CourthouseHistory

Southwest of Guilford County rests Davidson County, approximately 552 square miles with an estimated population of 158,582.  Formed from Rowan County in 1822, Davidson County is named after Brigadier General William Lee Davidson. He was an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1781 at the Battle of Cowan's Ford on the Catawba River. In 1911, a new county called Piedmont County was proposed to be created from Guilford, Davidson and Randolph Counties, with High Point as its county seat. That February state legislature voted down the plan after many people appeared at the Guilford County courthouse opposing the plan.      "The Big Chair" in Thomasville, NC

Davidson County's history comes alive at the Davidson County Historical Museum, located in the old courthouse, the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and at sites along the North Carolina Civil War Trail. Davidson County is home to Lexington, the county seat, and Thomasville, home of The Big Chair. It also encompasses Denton, Wallburg, Midway, Tyro and parts of High Point and Winston-Salem.
