Chatham County

Chatham County, originally part of Orange County, was established in 1771 and named after William Pitt the elder, first Earl of Chatham who was a defender of American rights in the British Parliament. Pittsboro, formerly named Pittsborough, was the first town to develop and was named the county seat in 1787.  Cumulatively, Chatham County hosts an estimated population of 64,772 and covers approximately 683 square miles in Pittsboro along with the municipalities Siler City, Gulf, Goldston, and Silk Hope.

Lifestyle

Chatham County is home to the NC Zen Center and the NC Arts Incubator, which is a five- building arts community offering studio space to artists, where they can gain inspiration by working cohesively to create a variety of media from pottery and glass to fiber. If this excites you, get involved with Chatham Arts by visiting the galleries and studios and learn more about the artists.

Fishing, boating, and camping enthusiasts will enjoy Jordan Lake with its almost 14,000 acres, as well as its many other activities. Chatham County is also adjacent to North Carolina’s newest Natural Area, Lower Haw River State Natural Area – almost 1000 acres along the scenic Haw River. Take the Devil’s Stompin’ Ground Scenic Byway through Bear Creek or visit the historical sites all over Chatham County.

Learn more about an eco-friendly lifestyle through one of many sustainable programs taught in the LEED Certified Sustainable Technologies Center at the Chatham County Campus of CCCC in Pittsboro. Enjoy a glass of wine made with honey at Starrlight Mead, taste the “spirit of their community in the flavor of their wine” at Silk Hope Winery or visit other Piedmont Vineyards and Wineries within close proximity.
